IIHF World Championship preview

Spring is finally here and you know what that means?€¦..hockey.

Many of you are probably scratching your heads at the mention of hockey considering the NHL season was cancelled long ago. The hockey I am referring to is the IIHF World Championships in Austria.

The tournament gets underway on April 30th and runs through May 15th. This year?€™s tourney features many of the world?€™s best players, eager to finish a less than eventful year with a bang.

Some sportsbooks have already released lines for the tournament. Canada is the early favorite at +175, followed by Sweden and the Czech Republic at +350 and Slovakia at +600. The United States are currently getting 9-1 odds.

Canada is favored for good reason. They have won the last two World Championships and have a roster loaded with talent. It appears that they have benefited most from the NHL lockout.

Canada will have Martin Brodeur between the pipes. He is arguably the best goaltender in the world today, and one of the best of all time. Their defense will be anchored by the likes of Ed Jovanovski and Wade Redden, both of whom played on Canada?€™s World Cup winning team last September. Offensively, Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, Ryan Smyth, and Rick Nash will lead the charge. Smyth has captained the Canadians in each of the last four years.

Sweden and Slovakia could be teams to avoid in this tourney as they have the least NHL talent on their rosters. However these teams do have plenty of players that have been playing together all season in their respective leagues.

The Russians have been a major flop in this tournament, having not taken the crown since back in 1993. They tend to have teams loaded with individuals not well suited for international team play.

The Czech Republic and Canada have combined to win seven of the past nine World Championships.

The Czechs should give Canada a run for their money as their roster is also extremely solid on paper. They have 17 NHLers, including Martin Havlat, Jaromir Jagr, and Petr Sykora. They are a country known for getting the most out of their talent available.

As for my prediction, I?€™ll side with team Canada to take their third straight world title. They have simply dominated in international hockey since winning gold in the 2002 Olympics. They simply have too much talent and pride to let this opportunity slip away. The Czech Republic also offers solid value, however I expect them to fall short this year.
